Stenophylax permistus is a species of caddisfly belonging to the family Limnephilidae (order Trichoptera). While caddisflies are primarily aquatic, this species is noted for its adaptability to moist terrestrial environments and semi-aquatic habitats. In specific agricultural scenarios, it may behave as an opportunistic pest, affecting crops grown near wetlands or poorly drained soils.

The primary hosts of this species include vegetable crops, seedlings, and green crops grown in humid climates. Larvae cause damage by feeding on the foliage, stems, and roots of young plants. Due to their voracious appetite, a high population density can cause significant thinning of seedling stands in early spring.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern. Larvae develop in moist environments, constructing portable cases out of environmental debris to protect their soft bodies. After the larval stage, they undergo pupation, ultimately emerging as winged adults. Adults are nocturnal, and their mating behavior is typically associated with damp conditions.

Damage is characterized by irregular holes and skeletonized leaves, often appearing near the soil line. Because the larvae remain sheltered in their cases, they are difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation. Significant harm occurs when the larvae target the plant's hypocotyl, causing the seedling to collapse and die rapidly.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on habitat modification. Key strategies include:

• improving soil drainage to reduce suitable larval habitats;
• keeping field perimeters free of excess organic debris;
• utilizing cultural practices to accelerate plant growth beyond the vulnerable seedling stage;
