Buffalo treehopper

The buffalo treehopper (Stictocephala bisonia) is a prominent pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Membracidae. It is named for the distinctive shape of its pronotum, which resembles the silhouette of a buffalo. These insects are well-adapted for camouflage, often blending seamlessly into the green foliage of their host plants.

This insect is a polyphagous pest with a broad range of host plants. It primarily targets fruit trees, including apples, pears, peaches, and plums, as well as grapevines. By feeding on the sap of these plants, the treehopper can cause significant stress, particularly to young trees that are still establishing their growth in orchards and nursery settings.

The biological cycle of the buffalo treehopper consists of a single generation per year. The insect overwinters as eggs embedded in the bark of twigs. In the spring, nymphs emerge and migrate to herbaceous weeds and ground cover to feed. After completing several instars, they transform into adults and return to woody plants to mate and lay their own eggs in fresh bark incisions.

The primary damage is caused by both direct feeding and oviposition activities. While sap-sucking reduces plant vigor, the most severe damage occurs when females cut crescent-shaped slits into the bark to deposit eggs. These incisions cause the bark to rupture, creating ideal entry points for pathogens, fungi, and bacteria, which can lead to limb dieback or permanent scarring of the trunks.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control of this pest. Recommended strategies include:

• Maintaining weed-free orchards to remove the necessary host plants for the developing nymphs.
• Pruning and destroying infested twigs during the dormant season to eliminate overwintering eggs.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the nymph emergence period if populations reach economic thresholds.
• Monitoring orchard edges where treehoppers typically migrate from neighboring fields or wild areas.
