Stigmaeopsis celarius is a specialized species of mite belonging to the family Tetranychidae. Known commonly as a bamboo spider mite, this organism is classified within the order Trombidiformes. It is exclusively adapted to living on bamboo species, making it a significant challenge for nurseries and botanical gardens specializing in these plants.

The host range of Stigmaeopsis celarius primarily includes various species of the Bambusoideae subfamily. These mites inhabit the abaxial (underside) surface of leaves, where they build distinct silken webs. These webs serve as a protective micro-environment, shielding the colony from predators and environmental fluctuations, allowing the population to thrive in dense bamboo clusters.

The life cycle of this mite is highly temperature-dependent, with rapid generation turnover during warm summer months. Eggs, larvae, and nymphal stages progress quickly, allowing the population to reach damaging levels in a very short timeframe. The mite's ability to survive and reproduce efficiently on its host plant makes it a persistent threat to both indoor and outdoor bamboo plantings.

Damage caused by Stigmaeopsis celarius is characterized by severe chlorosis. As the mites puncture leaf cells to extract sap, the foliage develops yellow, stippled spots. Over time, the leaf tissue dries out and turns necrotic. The presence of dense webbing is a hallmark sign, which interferes with photosynthesis and significantly reduces the plant's overall health and aesthetic value.
