Strongyloides belongs to the phylum Nematoda and the family Strongyloididae. These are microscopic phytoparasitic worms that maintain a specific lifestyle, often associated with plant roots and organic matter within the soil. They pose a significant threat to the healthy development of root systems in various crops.
This pest affects a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops, including vegetable, berry, and flower plants. Damage is particularly severe in greenhouse environments, where high humidity and stable temperatures provide ideal conditions for the reproduction and rapid spread of these nematodes.
The biology of Strongyloides is characterized by a complex life cycle, which includes both a parasitic phase and a free-living phase in the soil. Females lay eggs within root tissues or in the immediate rhizosphere. The larvae are highly mobile in soil moisture, allowing them to penetrate tender root areas and rapidly colonize new plants in the field.

The pest compromises the integrity of the root vascular system, creating entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial infections that often lead to severe root decay and plant collapse.
