It is critical to clarify that Strongyloides stercoralis is not a plant pest. Instead, it is a parasitic nematode that affects humans, dogs, and cats. Its relevance in an agricultural context is strictly related to human safety and public health, particularly in settings where soil sanitation may be compromised by improper disposal of human waste.

The organism belongs to the order Rhabditida and the family Strongyloididae. Its lifecycle is unique among parasites, as it features a heterogonic life cycle, allowing it to alternate between a free-living life in the soil and a parasitic life inside the host, making it highly adaptable to environmental conditions.

The biological cycle starts when filariform larvae in the soil penetrate human skin. They then enter the bloodstream, migrate to the lungs, and eventually reach the small intestine. In the intestine, adult females produce eggs that hatch into rhabditiform larvae, which are then excreted into the environment, continuing the cycle.

There is no direct agricultural damage caused to crops by this organism. However, it represents a biological hazard to farm employees. Infection, known as strongyloidiasis, can lead to severe health issues, including gastrointestinal distress, skin irritation (larva currens), and respiratory symptoms during the pulmonary migration phase.

Mitigation of risk relies entirely on maintaining strict hygiene standards. To ensure safety, consider the following:

  • Prohibit the use of untreated human waste as fertilizer on agricultural land.
  • Mandate the use of protective footwear, such as rubber boots, when working in soil.
  • Provide adequate handwashing facilities and clean water for all personnel.
  • Implement regular occupational health screenings for staff working in endemic areas.
