Unlike common social wasps, this species does not construct its own nests or possess a worker caste. Instead, it engages in obligate nest parasitism, infiltrating the colonies of other wasps, primarily within the genus Polistes.

The systematic position of this species is within the order Hymenoptera. Its biological cycle is entirely dependent on the host colony. Once the queen of Sulcopolistes sulcifer successfully invades a host nest, she effectively displaces or suppresses the resident queen, redirecting the host workers' efforts to raise her own reproductive offspring.
