Description
Swammerdamia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Yponomeutidae (ermine moths). These small insects are known to be pests of various trees and shrubs, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage to plants in orchards and forest plantations.
The primary host plants for Swammerdamia include fruit trees such as apple (Malus), pear (Pyrus), as well as hawthorn (Crataegus) and mountain ash (Sorbus). The larvae are leaf-feeders, often congregating in small groups and damaging the foliage through skeletonization.
The life cycle of these moths typically involves overwintering as larvae within protective silk cocoons tucked into bark crevices or near buds. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed on the opening buds and young leaves, marking the start of the primary infestation period.
The damage caused by Swammerdamia is easily identified by the presence of silken webs that bind together damaged leaves. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which stresses the tree, reduces photosynthetic activity, and negatively impacts the fruit yield for the current and following seasons.
