Palm weevil Syagrus rugifrons

Syagrus rugifrons is a beetle species belonging to the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets various species of palm trees, impacting both ornamental horticulture and agricultural production in regions where these hosts grow.

The primary host range includes numerous species of the Arecaceae family. This weevil is particularly damaging because it targets the critical parts of the palm, including the growing point and the succulent tissues of the trunk and frond bases.

The life cycle of the pest involves a hidden developmental phase. Adult weevils lay eggs on the plant surface, and the subsequent larvae bore into the interior of the palm. This tunneling activity restricts the flow of nutrients and destroys structural integrity from the inside out.

Damage symptoms often appear as chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), stunted growth, and the eventual death of the apical meristem. Because the feeding happens internally, the damage is frequently discovered only after the structural integrity of the palm has been severely compromised.

Effective management strategies include:

• Constant visual inspection of palms for signs of tunneling and sap exudation.
• Systemic insecticide treatments applied as trunk injections or soil drenches.
• Sanitation, including the prompt removal and destruction of infested palm material.
• Use of pheromone lures to monitor adult flight activity and reduce population density.
