Identifying these pests requires understanding that they typically involve hymenopterans specialized in developing within syconia. Misidentification often stems from the botanical term for the fruit-like inflorescence of the fig.
Systematically, these pests belong to various families within the order Hymenoptera. They have evolved a mutualistic or parasitic relationship with their host plants. The larvae develop inside the plant tissue, effectively feeding on the nutrient-rich cells of the developing flowers, which leads to significant physiological stress for the host plant.
