Description
The Syneta leaf beetle (Syneta albida) is a pest belonging to the Chrysomelidae family, order Coleoptera. Known for its pale, whitish-yellow elytra, this beetle often goes unnoticed until the damage it causes becomes visible on budding fruit trees in the early spring.
The primary damage is caused by the adults, which emerge from the soil just as buds begin to swell. These beetles are highly polyphagous, targeting a variety of fruit-bearing plants such as apples, pears, cherries, and plums, as well as hazelnut trees and various native forest species.
The life cycle of the beetle is partially subterranean. Female beetles deposit eggs in the soil around the root zones of host plants. The resulting larvae feed on the fine root hairs of the trees throughout the summer, which can weaken the host plant, while the beetle overwinters in the soil as a pupa or adult.
The economic impact is concentrated in the spring, as the beetles devour the developing buds. This activity often destroys the potential fruit crop before it can even bloom. In severe cases, the damage to young buds and subsequent foliage can stunt the growth of young trees in orchards and nurseries.
Management strategies focus on breaking the lifecycle and chemical control. Cultivation or tilling of the soil around the base of the trees during the pupation period can help reduce larval populations. When necessary, foliar applications of systemic or contact insecticides during the early leaf-out phase are effective at suppressing the adult beetle population.
