Description
The Oleander moth (Syntomeida epilais) is a species of moth within the family Erebidae. Native to the American tropics and subtropics, it is widely recognized as a specialist feeder on plants within the Apocynaceae family, most notably the common oleander (Nerium oleander).
The damage is primarily caused by the larval stage (caterpillars). These larvae are voracious feeders that strip the foliage from the host plant. In severe infestations, the plant can become completely defoliated, which compromises its ability to photosynthesize and significantly reduces its aesthetic value in landscape design.
Regarding their biology, the adult moths are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves. Once the caterpillars hatch, they feed gregariously during their early instars. Interestingly, these larvae sequester toxins from the host plant, rendering them unpalatable to many avian predators and natural enemies.
Identifying an infestation is relatively straightforward due to the presence of large, often orange and black striped caterpillars on the stems. Growers should look for the following symptoms:
- ragged leaf edges and skeletonized tissue;
- accumulations of frass (droppings) beneath the plant canopy;
- visible clusters of larvae on the leaves or stems.
Effective management requires prompt action to prevent large-scale defoliation. Cultural controls, such as pruning away infested branches, are useful in small garden settings. For broader applications, biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis are considered the gold standard, as they target the caterpillars specifically while preserving beneficial garden insects.
