Synuchus vivalis

Synuchus vivalis is a species of ground beetle belonging to the Carabidae family of the Coleoptera order. While the majority of carabids are predatory and considered beneficial to agriculture, Synuchus vivalis displays omnivorous tendencies. Under specific ecological stressors, these beetles can shift their diet to plant tissues, potentially damaging various agricultural crops.

This beetle is often identified in cereal crops, sugar beets, and diverse vegetable fields. The risk of economic damage increases significantly during drought periods or when their primary prey population declines, forcing the beetles to feed on seedlings, germinating seeds, or the tender stems of young plants to meet their nutritional requirements.

The biological cycle of Synuchus vivalis consists of egg, larval, and adult stages. The beetles overwinter in the soil or under dense crop residues, emerging as temperatures rise in early spring. Females deposit eggs directly into the soil, and larvae develop through several instars, feeding on decaying organic matter or living plant roots depending on food availability.

Damage symptoms usually include irregular grazing patterns on seedling roots, which leads to stunted growth, wilting, and thinning of crop stands. If adults are present in high numbers, they may also consume leaf tissue or stem bases, making the plants more vulnerable to environmental stress and secondary fungal infections. These impacts are most pronounced in fields with poor soil management.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to maintain populations below economic thresholds:
