The Marmalade hoverfly (Syrphus ribesii) is a common representative of the Diptera order and the Syrphidae family. While often associated with garden spaces, it serves a dual function: adults act as essential pollinators for a variety of fruit and vegetable crops, while their larvae are formidable predators of agricultural pests.
The species primarily targets plants infested with aphids. Since aphids are the main food source for the larvae, the hoverfly is frequently found on currants, fruit trees, and various garden flowers. The presence of larvae is a direct response to aphid outbreaks, which cause curling of leaves and stunted plant growth due to sap depletion.
The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most critical for pest management. Gardeners and farmers should focus on protecting these predators rather than eliminating them, as they provide free, high-efficiency pest control services throughout the growing season.
