Description

The Elongate flea beetle (Systena elongata) is a species of beetle in the family Chrysomelidae. Recognized as a significant pest, this insect causes considerable damage to various vegetable crops and is widely studied by agronomists due to its ability to impact agricultural productivity through both foliage and root feeding.

This pest has a broad host range, primarily attacking Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae families, including potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and various melons. Its ability to thrive on both crops and surrounding weeds makes it a resilient pest that is difficult to eradicate without persistent management efforts.

The lifecycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults typically overwinter in soil or debris and emerge in spring to feed and lay eggs. Larvae develop underground, feeding on the roots, while adults feed on the leaves. Depending on environmental conditions, the population can reach economic injury levels rapidly during the growing season.

Damage caused by Systena elongata is twofold. Adults create small, shot-like holes in the leaves, reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
