Striped flea beetle

The striped flea beetle (Systena taeniata) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae), order Coleoptera. It is a well-known pest in North American agriculture, recognized by its slender body and distinct longitudinal light-colored stripes on the elytra. The beetle's small size allows it to move rapidly among crops, making its control challenging for growers.

This pest has a very broad host range, feeding on a wide variety of plant species. The most commonly attacked crops include tomatoes, peppers, beans, corn, and sugar beets. Furthermore, the beetle thrives on several common weed species, which often serve as primary infestation sources before the beetles migrate into commercial fields.

The life cycle of Systena taeniata consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically lay eggs in the soil near the base of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae reside in the soil and feed on the roots. While the underground damage caused by larvae is less visible, it can significantly impact the plant's nutrient uptake and overall vigor during early development.

The most visible damage is caused by the adults, which chew small, circular holes in the leaves, often referred to as shot-hole damage. High populations of the beetle can lead to severe defoliation, particularly in seedling-stage plants, which can cause stunted growth or complete loss of stands. In addition, the beetles are known to act as vectors for various plant pathogens.
