Bee fly

The bee fly (Systoechus vulgaris) is a member of the Bombyliidae family within the order Diptera. These insects are easily recognized by their hairy, bee-like appearance, which serves as a mimicry strategy. Despite their resemblance to Hymenoptera, they are distinct flies that play a significant ecological role in agricultural landscapes.

The biological life cycle of Systoechus vulgaris is fundamentally linked to grasshoppers and locusts. Female flies deposit eggs into the soil near locust egg pods. Upon hatching, the larvae act as specialized parasitoids, infiltrating the egg pods and consuming the developing locust eggs. This specific behavior classifies them as natural biological control agents.

These flies do not cause damage to agricultural crops. Adults are frequent visitors to various flowers, where they feed on nectar and contribute to the pollination process. Because they do not feed on leaves, stems, or fruits, they are generally considered beneficial or neutral rather than direct pests of commercial crops.

The main concern regarding this species in agronomy is the collateral impact of broad-spectrum insecticide applications. When fields are sprayed to control locust populations, these beneficial parasitoids are often killed, which can lead to a long-term ecological imbalance where future locust outbreaks become harder to control naturally.
