It is a tiny, slender insect that often escapes early detection but can cause widespread damage to various fruit-bearing trees during the early stages of the growing season.
Host plants: This pest is a generalist and affects a wide range of horticultural and woody species. Primary hosts include pears, apples, plums, and cherries. Additionally, it can infest various hardwood trees such as sugar maple, beech, and ash, often making it difficult to control when migrating from nearby forested areas into orchards.
Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. Adults overwinter in the soil at depths of up to 20 centimeters. In early spring, when temperatures rise, they emerge and migrate to the buds of host plants. Females lay eggs within the developing plant tissue. The larvae feed on the sap of buds, leaves, and flowers before dropping into the soil to pupate for the remainder of the season.
Damage and severity: Economic injury occurs primarily in spring. Feeding by adults and larvae causes buds to fail to open or to dry out completely. Leaves that do emerge appear tattered, deformed, and covered in silver-grey spots, which later turn brown. Severe infestations lead to significant loss of fruit set and canopy decline.
Control measures: A successful management strategy focuses on monitoring and timely intervention:
- Use yellow sticky cards in early spring to monitor adult emergence and movement.
- Cultivate soil under the canopy in late autumn to disrupt overwintering sites.
- Apply registered insecticides just as the buds begin to swell to prevent early-season damage.
- Monitor orchards consistently to determine if threshold levels for chemical treatment are met.
