Description

The genus Tatera belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Muridae. Commonly known as gerbils, these small mammals are significant agricultural pests, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Unlike common house mice, they are highly adapted to low-moisture environments and construct complex underground burrow systems that serve as both habitat and protection.

These rodents cause extensive damage to a wide range of agricultural crops. Within their range, they primarily infest fields of cereals, legumes, oilseeds, as well as melons and vegetable crops. They inflict damage at various stages of plant growth, from digging up newly planted seeds to gnawing on stems and roots, and consuming grains directly from the ears during the ripening phase.

The biology of Tatera is characterized by high reproductive rates and rapid maturation, allowing populations to explode under favorable environmental conditions. Their life cycle is optimized for survival, with short gestation periods and quick development of young. They are largely nocturnal, which complicates early detection, while their burrows can reach depths of over one meter, providing shelter from predators and environmental extremes.

The nature of the damage manifests as localized destruction of seedling stands, leading to significant gaps in crops. Beyond direct biomass consumption, gerbils contaminate stored and standing crops with feces, rendering them unfit for human or animal consumption. Furthermore, their extensive digging activity promotes soil erosion, which can lead to a long-term decline in the fertility and productivity of the infested land.

Control measures against Tatera require an integrated approach combining agronomic and chemical strategies. Deep plowing is highly effective as it destroys burrow systems and disrupts their nesting behavior. Chemical control involves the use of anticoagulant-based baits and burrow fumigation. Preventive measures include maintaining vegetation-free buffer zones along field edges to eliminate refuges where these rodents hide and breed.
