Description

The apple fruit rhynchites (Latin: Tatianaerhynchites aequatus) is a significant pest of orchard crops, belonging to the leaf-roller weevil family (Rhynchitidae) within the order Coleoptera. This insect is widely recognized for its ability to cause substantial economic losses in fruit production.

The pest primarily targets fruit trees including apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot. Adult weevils emerge in early spring and feed on opening buds, young leaves, and developing flower clusters, often destroying the reproductive parts of the tree before fruit set can occur.

The life cycle involves egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside young fruit or succulent shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae feed inside the fruit tissue, which eventually causes the fruit to shrivel or drop prematurely. The larvae then move into the soil to pupate.

Visible damage includes the drying of terminal shoots, severe deformation of young fruits, and early leaf drop. In high-density populations, the apple fruit rhynchites can cause massive premature fruit drop, leading to significant reductions in both yield quality and quantity.
