Description

Systematic position. The Dock sawfly (Taxonus glabratus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is a well-known specialist pest that targets plants within the Rumex genus, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage to garden crops.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this insect are various species of dock (Rumex). While it is highly specific, it occasionally impacts related plants such as rhubarb. Heavy infestations can lead to complete defoliation if left unmanaged during the peak growing season.

Biology and life cycle. The adult sawfly is a small, dark-colored wasp. Females insert eggs into the leaf tissue using their saw-like ovipositor. The larvae, often called false caterpillars, hatch and undergo several instars while actively consuming foliage. The pupation typically occurs within the soil, allowing the insect to survive winter as a pupa in a cocoon.

Damage and economic impact. The larvae are voracious feeders. Early instars create small, translucent windows in the leaves, while later stages skeletonize the foliage entirely, leaving only the main veins. This damage not only reduces the yield but also makes the greens visually unappealing and inedible for consumers.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices include late-autumn soil cultivation to disrupt pupal overwintering sites. During the growing season, regular weeding and monitoring of leaf undersides are crucial.
