Systematically, this species belongs to the order Patellogastropoda. The mollusk is characterized by a distinctive conical shell. As a grazer, it feeds on films of algae and bacteria on hard surfaces. Its ability to colonize artificial substrates, such as nets, cages, and ropes, is the primary reason it is considered a pest in professional shellfish farming.
