Teia

Teia (lat. Teia) is a genus of moths belonging to the family Erebidae, subfamily Lymantriinae. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various parts of the world, with species like Teia anartoides posing threats to agricultural and horticultural sectors due to their voracious larval feeding habits and broad host range.

Taxonomically, they are classified within the order Lepidoptera. A distinctive biological trait of this genus is the extreme sexual dimorphism. Males are fully winged and capable of flight, which aids in finding mates across distances. Females are often brachypterous (having reduced wings) and flightless, remaining on or near the host plant where they emerge from the pupa to lay their eggs.

The host range of Teia is remarkably diverse, including various fruit trees, shrubs, ornamental plants, and forest trees such as acacia and eucalyptus. Their polyphagous nature makes them a consistent threat, as they can shift between available vegetation throughout the growing season, causing widespread damage to plant foliage.

The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The eggs are typically laid in large clusters on the exterior of the female's cocoon. Upon hatching, the larvae, known as caterpillars, begin to feed aggressively. These larvae are equipped with defensive setae (hairs) that can cause allergic reactions in humans and deter many predators, contributing to their high survival rate in various environments.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include regular monitoring of host plants for egg masses, which should be removed and destroyed manually. Biological control using bacterial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis is highly effective against early-instar larvae. Chemical control, if deemed necessary, should be applied during the early stages of larval development when they are most susceptible to contact insecticides.
