Decorated Treehopper

Systematic position. The Decorated treehopper (Telamona decorata) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Membracidae family. These insects are easily recognized by their highly developed pronotum, which often mimics thorns or twigs, providing excellent camouflage against the bark of their host trees.

Affected crops. The primary hosts for this species are various oak species (Quercus), including the white oak and the northern red oak. They are specialized feeders often found in hardwood forests, arboretums, and landscaping, where they congregate on healthy to moderately stressed mature trees.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Telamona decorata is synchronized with the growth phases of its host trees. They typically overwinter as eggs deposited beneath the bark or within stem crevices. Upon hatching in spring, the nymphs begin feeding on sap, progressing through several instars before molting into winged adults that are capable of flight and dispersal to neighboring trees.

Nature of damage and pest status. The damage is primarily caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on the phloem sap of young twigs. Constant piercing of the bark tissues can lead to stunted shoot growth and localized tissue death. Furthermore, the egg-laying scars create structural weaknesses that can harbor opportunistic pathogens, potentially leading to long-term tree decline.

Control measures. Managing the Decorated treehopper involves maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil care to reduce attractiveness to pests. In nursery or urban settings, physical removal of heavily infested twigs is recommended. Chemical control is occasionally utilized during the nymphal stage, using targeted systemic insecticides to minimize the impact on beneficial insects.
