Description

It is critical to note that Telenomus species are not plant pests. Instead, they are highly beneficial parasitoid wasps belonging to the family Scelionidae. Taxonomically, they are classified under the order Hymenoptera. They are minute wasps that do not feed on plant tissues. Their biological niche is strictly defined by their role as egg parasitoids, meaning they specifically target the egg stage of host insects to complete their own development cycle.

The life cycle of Telenomus is completed entirely within the host's egg. A female wasp locates the pest's egg mass, inserts her ovipositor, and lays her own egg inside. The resulting larva consumes the yolk of the host's egg, effectively destroying it. After pupating inside the shell, the adult wasp emerges to continue the cycle.
