Telenomus alsophilae

The life cycle of this wasp is strictly synchronized with the egg-laying period of the host. The adult female locates the host's egg clusters and oviposits inside the eggs. The developing wasp larva consumes the host embryo, effectively killing the pest before it hatches, which prevents the resulting defoliation.

The efficacy of Telenomus alsophilae as a biocontrol agent is high due to its host specificity. In optimal conditions, it can parasitize a vast majority of the eggs in a cluster, providing a significant suppression of the next generation of defoliators. This makes it an essential component of integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

To promote and utilize Telenomus alsophilae effectively in the field, several management practices should be considered:

• Limit the use of broad-spectrum insecticides that could harm adult wasp populations.
• Maintain biodiversity by planting flowering shrubs near orchards to provide nectar for the adults.
• Monitor the phenology of both the looper and the parasitoid to avoid overlapping chemical sprays with the wasp's active period.
