Description

Systematic position. The birch leaf-rolling weevil (Temnocerus nanus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Attelabidae. It is a specialized phytophagous insect that displays a unique behavioral pattern of using plant leaves as a nursery for its offspring.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets trees of the genus Betula (birch). While they are synonymous with birch, they can occasionally be found on alder (Alnus) and hazel (Corylus) species. Infestations are most detrimental in young forest plantations, nurseries, and ornamental tree settings.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in the litter or soil near host trees and emerge in early spring. The female constructs a leaf roll (often described as a cigar-like structure) by cutting and folding the leaf. Eggs are deposited inside these rolls, providing the larvae with both food and protection from environmental stress and predators.

Damage and economic significance. The larvae feed inside the leaf rolls, causing the foliage to wilt, turn brown, and drop prematurely. Adults also feed on leaves, creating small circular perforations. High population densities result in severe defoliation, which can hinder the photosynthetic capacity and growth of the host tree, especially in young saplings.

Protection measures. Management strategies include sanitation practices such as the collection and removal of infested, rolled leaves before the larvae emerge to pupate in the soil. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides during the spring period of adult activity. Promoting biodiversity and bird populations in the area can also provide biological suppression of this pest.
