Description
The Japanese bark-gnawing beetle (Temnoscheila japonica) is a member of the Trogossitidae family within the order Coleoptera. While many related species are known predators, this specific beetle is often associated with weakened trees, acting as a secondary pest that exploits damaged forest ecosystems.
It affects various coniferous and deciduous tree species. The beetle typically colonizes trees already stressed by drought, fungal infections, or primary infestation by wood-boring beetles. This opportunistic behavior allows it to thrive in the subcortical spaces of declining timber.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern. During the spring and summer, adults emerge to mate and lay eggs within crevices in the bark. Larvae hatch and begin feeding under the bark, constructing galleries that can disrupt the vascular system of the host plant throughout their developmental stages.
Damage caused by this insect involves the mechanical destruction of the phloem and cambium layers. Although usually secondary, the cumulative impact of their feeding accelerates tree decay, significantly lowering the plant's resistance to environmental stressors and promoting the spread of decay-causing fungi.
