Systematic position: The yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Tenebrionidae family. It is widely recognized as a major pest of stored products, particularly thriving in environments where grain and milling by-products are processed and stored over long periods.

Crops and infested products: This pest primarily targets cereal grains such as wheat, oats, rye, and corn. It also infests a broad range of processed agricultural goods, including flour, bran, semolina, pasta, biscuits, and animal feed. In warehouse settings, it can exploit cracks and crevices to colonize various dry food commodities.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult beetle is dark brown or black, measuring up to 18 mm. The larvae, known as mealworms, are highly resilient and feed continuously on the host material. The life cycle can be completed in a few months under optimal conditions, but it often spans up to a year.

Nature of damage and pest status: Damage is characterized by the presence of larvae tunneling through the grain, consuming the endosperm, and leaving behind frass, shed skins, and debris. This contamination renders the food product unsuitable for human consumption or processing. Furthermore, the activity of the larvae increases the moisture content of the substrate, promoting mold growth and further spoiling the quality of the harvest.

Protection measures: Managing Tenebrio molitor requires a focus on sanitation and preventative warehouse protocols:

• Strict sanitation to remove residual grain and dust where larvae hide.
• Maintaining low-moisture storage conditions to discourage larval development.
• Regular inspection and monitoring using sticky traps.
• Professional fumigation and residual insecticide treatments of storage facility structures.
