Cadelle beetle
Tenebroides mauritanicus
Description
The Cadelle beetle (Tenebroides mauritanicus) is a coleopteran insect belonging to the family Trogossitidae. It is recognized as a cosmopolitan pest that poses a significant threat to stored products, frequently found in granaries, flour mills, and food warehouses globally, where it thrives due to stable food sources and shelter.
The beetle is highly polyphagous, infesting a wide range of stored commodities. Its diet primarily includes grains such as wheat, corn, rice, barley, and oats, but it also attacks flour, meal, nuts, dried fruits, and even seeds of various crops. The larvae are particularly notorious for their ability to chew through packaging materials like paper, cardboard, and light wooden structures, allowing them to penetrate sealed containers.
The biological cycle of this pest involves several developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in clusters within the cracks and crevices of storage facilities or directly inside the grain mass. The larvae are active and can consume large quantities of material before pupating. Under optimal temperature conditions, the life cycle is completed relatively quickly, leading to multiple generations per year.
In terms of economic damage, the Cadelle beetle causes both direct and indirect losses. They consume the germ of the grain, significantly reducing its weight and viability. Furthermore, the presence of these beetles and their larvae leads to substantial contamination of the product with frass and larval skins, severely compromising the quality and safety of the foodstuff for human or animal consumption.
Effective management and control measures should include:
- Strict sanitation and removal of leftover grain debris from storage bins.
- Regular inspection and cleaning of all machinery in processing facilities.
- Application of professional structural treatments or fumigation to control infestations.
- Moisture management to keep stored grain dry and less attractive to insects.
- Utilization of airtight storage solutions to prevent external contamination.
