Tenrec

The Tenrec (Latin: Tenrec ecaudatus) belongs to the Tenrecidae family. While not primarily classified as an agricultural pest, this mammal can cause significant mechanical damage to field and garden crops. Its search for food in the soil often leads to the destruction of root systems and the disruption of soil structure, negatively impacting plant vitality.

In terms of biology, the tenrec is a nocturnal animal that thrives in humid, loose, and organic-rich soil. Its life cycle involves phases of high activity and seasonal rest. Due to their burrowing habits, they create tunnels under crops, which facilitates their movement and makes them difficult to control once they have established a territory within a garden or plantation.

The damage caused by tenrecs is mainly indirect but detrimental. By digging into the soil to prey on earthworms and insect larvae, they disturb the delicate root zone of seedlings and young plants. This causes the roots to dry out, leading to wilting and stunted growth. In severe cases, this physical interference results in the loss of entire crop rows.

The economic impact of this animal is significant for small-scale gardening and vegetable farming. Beyond the physical damage, the movement of these animals through the soil can lead to the spreading of soil-borne pathogens. When they breach root tissues, they create entry points for fungi and bacteria, leading to rot and disease outbreaks in the plant population.

Protective measures should focus on deterrence and exclusion. Recommended strategies include:

• Installation of fine-mesh metal fencing buried at least 20 cm into the ground.
• Use of ultrasonic pest repellers that target nocturnal mammals.
• Maintaining clean soil conditions to reduce the population of invertebrate food sources.
• Applying non-toxic scent-based repellents around the perimeter of vulnerable garden beds.
