Description

The common tenrec (Tenrec ecaudatus) is a member of the Afrosoricida order and the Tenrecidae family. While primarily insectivorous, this mammal can act as an agricultural pest in its native range and introduced habitats, frequently disrupting small-scale farming and vegetable plots through its foraging behaviors.

The primary crops affected by the common tenrec include root vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and yams. Their foraging activity involves extensive digging in the upper layers of soil, which mechanically destroys the root structure of young plants, leading to wilting, stunted development, and reduced yield quality.

Regarding its biology, the species is known for its remarkable reproductive rate, with females capable of producing large litters. This high biological potential means that a localized population can rapidly expand, causing cumulative damage to agricultural areas over a single growing season as they aggressively search for invertebrates.

Damage occurs primarily through burrowing and direct consumption. Beyond the physical disruption of roots, the wounds created by the tenrec’s claws and teeth provide entry points for secondary pathogens, such as soil-borne fungi and bacteria. This frequently results in the rotting of tubers, rendering the produce unmarketable and susceptible to further decay in storage.

Effective protection strategies require both exclusion and habitat modification. Installing fine-mesh wire fences buried at least 20-30 cm deep is the most reliable method for preventing access. Additionally, reducing the presence of organic debris and insect populations through good farm hygiene diminishes the attractants that lure tenrecs to the field, thereby protecting the root zone.
