Description
Systematic position. Tephroclystia (often treated as a subgenus within the genus Eupithecia) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Geometridae (inchworm moths). This group consists of small moths whose larvae lead a concealed lifestyle and are frequently specialized in feeding on the reproductive organs of host plants.
Crops and pest significance. This genus of pests attacks a wide range of ornamental, vegetable, and fruit crops. Significant damage occurs during the flowering and fruit-setting stages. The larvae consume the inner parts of buds, flowers, and young fruits, leading to the shedding of ovaries, loss of marketability, and in severe cases, complete crop failure in localized areas.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Tephroclystia includes four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The moths are primarily active at twilight. Females lay eggs individually or in small groups on buds or flower stems. Pupation usually occurs in the soil or within plant debris, where the pest successfully overwinters in the pupal stage.
Nature of damage. The presence of this pest is often difficult to detect in early stages, as the larvae frequently camouflage themselves to match the color of pedicels or petals. Key symptoms of infestation include deformed buds, the presence of frass inside flowers, and visible entry holes. Severe damage causes the growth of reproductive organs to cease, followed by wilting and death.
Control measures. Controlling this pest requires an integrated approach. Regular monitoring of plantings using pheromone traps is essential. When populations exceed the economic threshold, contact-stomach insecticides are effective. Preventive practices include:
- Removal and destruction of plant debris in the autumn.
- Deep soil cultivation to disrupt and destroy pupae.
- Timely weed control, as weeds may serve as alternate hosts for the pest.
