Description
Systematic position: The Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina) is a member of the order Testudines and the family Emydidae. While primarily recognized as a wildlife species, in specific agricultural contexts, especially near woodland borders, these turtles can impact horticultural activities and vegetable production.
Damaged crops: As omnivores, Terrapene species feed on a diverse diet. In home gardens and small farms, they are known to consume strawberries, blackberries, and other low-hanging fruits. They may also damage tender vegetable seedlings by trampling or consuming young leaves, particularly in moisture-rich environments.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the box turtle is characterized by slow development and long-term site fidelity. During the active season, typically from spring through early autumn, they forage for food and water. They excavate nests in soft soil, which can inadvertently disrupt local crop patterns if the nesting site overlaps with cultivated rows.
Damage and pest status: The pest potential of box turtles is localized but can be significant for small-scale growers. Damage includes the consumption of ripe produce, rendering it unmarketable, and mechanical harm to young plants caused by the turtle’s heavy shell and movement. They do not typically cause large-scale agricultural losses but can be a nuisance for intensive garden management.
Protection measures: Management should be strictly non-lethal, as many Terrapene populations are protected or declining. Recommended strategies include:
- Installing physical barriers such as hardware cloth or wire fencing at least 12 inches high.
- Utilizing raised bed gardening to keep produce out of reach.
- Maintaining a clean orchard floor to remove attractive fallen fruit.
- Relocating individual turtles to nearby suitable forest habitats.
