Red-eared slider

Trachemys scripta

Description

Systematic position: The Red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta) belongs to the order Testudines and the family Emydidae. It is classified as one of the world's worst invasive species, causing significant ecological and agricultural disruption in regions where it has been introduced outside its natural habitat.

Affected crops: This species poses a direct threat to aquatic crop farming, including water lilies, lotus, watercress, and commercial rice cultivation in flooded fields. They aggressively forage on young seedlings, destroying the plant structure and reducing overall harvest yields in managed ponds.

Biology and development cycle: Red-eared sliders are highly opportunistic omnivores. While juveniles prefer animal protein, adults consume significant amounts of aquatic vegetation. Their ability to survive in polluted or fluctuating water environments and their rapid reproductive rate allow them to establish dominance in agricultural water systems quickly.

Nature of damage: The damage is twofold: direct mechanical destruction of crops through biting and trampling, and environmental degradation. By consuming aquatic plants, they eliminate the natural filter systems of ponds, leading to nutrient imbalances that promote algae blooms and decrease the health of cultivated aquatic species.

Control measures: Management of this pest requires a proactive approach:

  • Installation of perimeter exclusion fencing to prevent turtle migration.
  • Deployment of specialized basking traps to monitor and remove individuals.
  • Modification of shoreline areas to remove suitable nesting sites.
  • Education and strict regulation on the disposal of exotic pets in natural waterways.
