Description

Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Ichneumonidae. These parasitoid wasps are widely distributed in agroecosystems where they interact with various hosts, occasionally becoming a factor that affects the productivity of agricultural crops due to their complex biological role.

Crops affected. The primary targets for this pest are members of the Brassicaceae family. It predominantly infests winter and spring oilseed rape, mustard, and turnip crops. The presence of these crops in the field creates optimal conditions for the pest's reproductive cycle during the pod-formation stage.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is synchronized with the phenological development of oilseed rape. Adults overwinter in the soil and emerge during the spring. Females oviposit into the pods of host plants. The larvae develop inside the pods, feeding on the internal tissues, and eventually return to the soil to pupate before the next season begins.

Nature of damage. The primary damage is caused by the larvae feeding within the seed pods. This feeding pattern leads to reduced seed weight, loss of total yield, and pod dehiscence. Furthermore, damaged pods are significantly more susceptible to secondary fungal infections, which further degrades the quality of the harvested produce.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.

  • Implement proper crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
  • Control cruciferous weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
