Tersilochus
Tersilochus microgaster
Description
Systematic position. Tersilochus microgaster belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Ichneumonidae. It is a specialized parasitoid wasp known for its role as a natural enemy of several insect pests that attack cruciferous crops.
Target crops. This insect is commonly found in oilseed rape, mustard, and other related brassica fields. It does not feed on the plant tissues themselves; rather, it seeks out the larvae of specific agricultural pests, primarily cabbage seed weevils, within the plant's pods.
Biology and life cycle. The adult wasp emerges during the flowering stage of the host crop. It uses its ovipositor to lay eggs into the larvae of the host pest hidden inside the pods. The developing wasp larva feeds on the host from the inside, eventually killing it before reaching the adult stage.
Nature of damage and significance. The damage to the crop is caused by the primary pests (weevils), while the parasitoid itself acts as a regulator. If the population of Tersilochus microgaster is insufficient, the pest population can cause severe losses in yield, as the weevils consume developing seeds within the pods.
Protection measures. To maintain a healthy population of this beneficial insect, agricultural producers should follow these guidelines:
- Avoid spraying broad-spectrum insecticides during the crop's flowering period.
- Utilize integrated pest management (IPM) to monitor pest levels accurately.
- Implement proper crop rotation to break the life cycle of the host pests.
- Favor selective biological controls that do not harm the parasitoid population.
