Description
Systematic position. Tersilochus obscurator belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Ichneumonidae. It is a highly specialized endoparasitoid that plays a critical role in agricultural ecosystems by controlling the populations of specific beetle pests.
Host crops. This species is primarily associated with brassicaceous crops, especially oilseed rape. While it does not feed on the plant tissues itself, its survival is linked to the presence of host larvae, such as the cabbage seed weevil (Ceutorhynchus assimilis), which infest the pods of these plants.
Biology and lifecycle. The adults emerge during the flowering stage of the rape crop. Females use their long ovipositors to locate host larvae hidden inside the pods and deposit their eggs. The parasitoid larva consumes the host from the inside, eventually killing it before pupating in the soil. The species typically completes one or more generations per year depending on environmental conditions.
Damage and importance. In the context of agronomy, Tersilochus obscurator is considered a beneficial insect. By suppressing the populations of seed weevils, it prevents significant yield losses. Mismanagement through excessive chemical application can eliminate these beneficial wasps, resulting in a resurgence of the very pests they are meant to control.
