Tethea

Tethea is a genus of moths belonging to the family Drepanidae (hooktip moths). These insects are recognized in forestry and horticultural contexts as defoliators that can affect the health of various deciduous tree species. While they are not always considered primary pests, their presence in large numbers can significantly reduce the vitality of the host plants.

The primary hosts for Tethea species include broad-leaved trees such as birch (Betula), poplar (Populus), and aspen. They are frequently observed in woodland areas and adjacent orchards. The caterpillars target the foliage, consuming the leaf tissue, which can lead to reduced photosynthetic capacity of the trees during the growing season.

The biological cycle typically involves one or two generations per year, depending on the geographical latitude and climate. The overwintering stage occurs as a pupa, protected within a silken cocoon spun among leaf litter or in crevices of the tree bark. Adult moths emerge in the spring, initiating the cycle of egg-laying on the leaves.

Regarding the damage and economic importance, the larvae are known for their habit of tying leaves together with silk to create protective shelters. This behavior makes them less susceptible to contact-based pest control methods and predators. Heavy infestations can lead to partial or complete defoliation, which causes stress to the host trees and increases their vulnerability to diseases.

Management strategies for Tethea require monitoring and timely intervention. Key approaches include:

• Regular visual inspections of foliage for signs of leaf-rolling or skeletal damage.
• Promoting biodiversity in the area to encourage natural predators, such as parasitic wasps.
