Description
Taxonomic position. The couch grass spider mite (Tetranychus agropyronus) belongs to the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and the family Tetranychidae. As a specialized phytophagous mite, it primarily inhabits various wild grasses and, under favorable conditions, spreads to cultivated agricultural crops.
Host plants. This mite species is predominantly associated with cereal grasses such as couch grass (Elymus repens). However, it is recognized as a pest for major cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and oats, particularly in regions where environmental conditions favor the rapid proliferation of mite populations.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The mites overwinter as fertilized females in plant debris or soil crevices. As spring temperatures rise, they emerge to infest the leaves, where they spin fine webs and deposit eggs on the abaxial leaf surface to begin the seasonal cycle.
Type of damage and harmfulness. By piercing the plant cells and sucking the sap, the mites cause localized chlorosis, appearing as small pale spots on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, these spots coalesce, leading to leaf discoloration, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and plant dehydration, which ultimately results in yield loss.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this mite. Strategies include
