Spider mite Tetranychus amicus

Tetranychus amicus is a specialized species of spider mite within the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. These pests are known for their ability to thrive in warm conditions, positioning themselves on the undersides of leaves where they construct fine webs to protect their colonies from environmental factors and natural predators.

The host range of Tetranychus amicus includes a variety of plant species, particularly those grown in intensive farming systems. The mite pierces the plant epidermis with its mouthparts to extract cellular content, causing physiological distress to the host plant. They are particularly problematic in dry environments where their reproductive rates peak significantly.

The life cycle encompasses several developmental stages including eggs, larvae, protonymphs, deutonymphs, and adults. Because of their fast generation turnover, populations can reach economically damaging levels in a short amount of time. Overwintering typically occurs in plant debris, soil crevices, or protected areas near the base of host plants where they undergo diapause.

Signs of infestation initially appear as small, chlorotic stippling on the leaves, which eventually leads to widespread bronzing or yellowing. As the infestation progresses, the web becomes more noticeable, and the plant experiences reduced vigor and premature leaf drop. Severe infestations can significantly reduce crop yield and quality by limiting the plant's ability to photosynthesize.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management approach. Key practices include monitoring plant stress levels, removing weeds that may serve as alternative hosts, and enhancing the humidity in greenhouse environments if possible. When populations exceed the economic threshold, the application of specific acaricides is necessary, ensuring careful rotation of chemical classes to manage the risk of resistance.
