Ezo spider mite

Taxonomic position: The Ezo spider mite (Tetranychus ezoensis) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. It is a specialized mite species that has been identified as a significant pest, particularly affecting specific woody plant species in its distribution range, often found in East Asian ecosystems.

Host plants and damage: The primary hosts for this mite are members of the Salix genus. By feeding on the underside of leaves, the mites pierce the plant cells and extract sap. This feeding behavior disrupts photosynthesis and can significantly reduce the vitality of the host plant, leading to premature leaf drop if left unchecked.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The speed of development is highly dependent on ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly shortening the generation time. Females typically overwinter in protected locations such as bark crevices or plant debris, emerging when favorable environmental conditions return.

Character of damage: Early signs of infestation appear as minute chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. As the mite population grows, these spots coalesce, giving the leaves a stippled or bleached appearance. In severe cases, the infested area becomes covered with fine silk webbing, and the leaves may turn brown, curl, and die off, causing physiological stress to the tree.
