Description
The Kanzawa spider mite (Tetranychus kanzawai) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. It is a highly significant agricultural pest recognized for its ability to devastate various crops by sap-feeding, which disrupts the physiological processes of the plants.
This mite is a polyphagous pest with a diverse host range. It is particularly notorious for damaging tea plantations, strawberries, citrus trees, soybeans, and various ornamental plants. Its distribution is global, with major impact in regions where intensive agricultural practices are applied.
The biological cycle of Tetranychus kanzawai is characterized by rapid development through stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Due to high reproductive rates and short generation times, populations can explode within a few weeks under favorable weather conditions, usually hot and dry climates.
Damage typically begins on the underside of leaves, where the mites puncture cells to feed. This results in stippling, chlorosis, and eventual defoliation. A distinct feature of infestation is the fine webbing produced by the mites, which can eventually cover the entire foliage, significantly reducing the market value and health of the plant.
Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to minimize chemical reliance and prevent the buildup of resistance:
- Monitor fields consistently, paying attention to the underside of leaves for early infestation signs.
- Release natural predators, such as predatory mites (e.g., Phytoseiulus persimilis).
- Apply acaricides according to local guidelines, ensuring rotation to manage resistance.
