Description

Systematic position. Tetranychus lambi belongs to the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and family Tetranychidae. As a highly specialized phytophagous mite, it poses a significant threat to various agricultural and ornamental plants worldwide, especially in warm climates where environmental conditions favor rapid population growth.

Host plants. The mite is known for its wide host range, demonstrating strong polyphagy. It primarily attacks deciduous fruit trees, including apples and pears, but is also frequently observed on citrus species and various shrubs. Its ability to switch hosts throughout the season makes it a versatile pest that can persist in various habitats, from intensive orchards to home gardens.

Biology and life cycle. The development of Tetranychus lambi proceeds through egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The duration of each stage is highly dependent on ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the maturation process. Overwintering females typically seek refuge in bark crevices or under leaf litter, emerging in spring to establish new colonies on developing foliage.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. Feeding occurs on the undersides of leaves, where the mites pierce epidermal cells to extract plant juices. This activity causes the characteristic stippling or bronzing of leaves. In severe infestations, the presence of fine webbing covering the leaf surface indicates high mite density, which disrupts gas exchange and photosynthesis, eventually leading to leaf drop and decreased fruit quality.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Tetranychus lambi. Effective strategies include:

  • Regular scouting of the orchard to detect early signs of infestation.
  • Application of targeted acaricides when pest thresholds are exceeded.
  • Maintenance of orchard hygiene to remove overwintering sites for females.
  • Promotion of natural predatory mite populations, such as Phytoseiidae, to provide biological control.
