The Mariana spider mite (Tetranychus marianae) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. This mite is recognized as a significant pest in tropical and subtropical agriculture, posing a serious threat to greenhouse production systems by colonizing plant foliage rapidly.

This species primarily infests plants in the Solanaceae family, with tomatoes, eggplants, and potatoes being the most susceptible hosts. Due to its broad host range, it can also survive on various weed species, which act as secondary reservoirs for the population throughout the growing season.

The biological cycle of Tetranychus marianae follows the typical pattern of spider mites: egg, larva, protonymph, and deutonymph stages before reaching adulthood. The rate of development is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and relative humidity, where hot and dry conditions can lead to explosive population growth within a short timeframe.

Feeding occurs through the piercing of epidermal cells, leading to the extraction of sap. Initial signs include fine stippling or chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. As the population density increases, the leaves become discolored, necrotic, and eventually drop.
