Neocaledonian spider mite
Tetranychus neocaledonicus
Description
Taxonomic position. The Neocaledonian spider mite (Tetranychus neocaledonicus) is a member of the family Tetranychidae within the order Trombidiformes. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that thrives in tropical and subtropical environments, frequently causing economic losses in greenhouses and outdoor plantations worldwide.
Host range. This species is a highly polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plant species. Common hosts include vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants, as well as industrial crops like cotton and sweet potatoes. Furthermore, it often infests citrus trees and a variety of ornamental flora, making it a threat to diverse agricultural sectors.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Tetranychus neocaledonicus is rapid, especially during warm periods. The developmental stages include the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. The mite's ability to reproduce quickly and its high fecundity allow populations to explode within just a few days if environmental conditions are favorable, particularly in high-temperature, low-humidity settings.
Damage and economic impact. The mite feeds by puncturing plant cell walls and extracting the fluid contents, leading to cellular death. Visible symptoms include chlorotic spots on leaves, which eventually lead to necrosis, foliage drop, and plant wilting. The presence of dense silk webbing is a hallmark of an infestation, which significantly impairs photosynthesis and stunts the overall growth of the host plant.
Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as weed control and maintaining appropriate humidity levels are fundamental. Chemical control involves the timely application of acaricides, ensuring full coverage of the leaf undersides. Because these mites are known to develop resistance to chemicals, growers must rotate products with different modes of action to maintain efficacy.
