Description
The Pacific spider mite (Tetranychus pacificus) is a member of the Trombidiformes order and the Tetranychidae family. It is recognized as a major economic pest in agriculture, known for its ability to rapidly infest a wide variety of plant hosts under hot and arid conditions.
This pest affects many agricultural crops, particularly orchards, vineyards, and cotton. It feeds primarily on the undersides of leaves, piercing the leaf tissues with its mouthparts to extract sap, which significantly stresses the host plant and impairs its physiological functions.
The life cycle of the Pacific spider mite consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Depending on the ambient temperature, they can complete multiple generations in a single season. Females overwinter in protected areas, including soil debris and bark crevices, emerging when temperatures rise.
Damage caused by this pest is characterized by chlorosis and stippling on leaf surfaces, followed by the development of thin webbing between leaves. If left unmanaged, severe infestations lead to leaf senescence, canopy dieback, and reduced fruit quality, causing significant financial losses to producers.
