Description
Taxonomic position: Tetranychus piercei belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. It is a highly specialized mite species recognized globally as a significant pest, particularly threatening for tropical plantations such as bananas.
Host plants: While the primary host is the banana plant (Musa spp.), this mite is also known to infest various other agricultural and ornamental plants. Its ability to adapt to different crops makes it a challenging pest to manage within tropical and subtropical farming systems.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of this mite includes egg, larva, two nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph), and adult. Favorable conditions, such as high temperatures and low relative humidity, accelerate their reproductive rate, leading to explosive population growth within a very short period of time.
Damage and harmfulness: The mites feed by piercing the plant tissue with their mouthparts, extracting cell contents.
