Description
The Taiwanese spider mite (Tetranychus taiwanicus) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. As a specialized agricultural pest, this mite poses a constant threat to plantations by feeding on the sap of various host plants, leading to severe physiological stress and reduced commercial value of the harvested produce.
This species has a wide host range, primarily attacking fruit trees, berries, and several greenhouse vegetable crops. Because these mites colonize the underside of leaves, they are often difficult to detect in the early stages of infestation, allowing their population to reach damaging thresholds rapidly.
The biological cycle of the mite includes egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Favorable environmental conditions, such as high temperatures and low relative humidity, accelerate their reproductive cycle, enabling the production of numerous overlapping generations throughout the growing season.
Damage is characterized by fine stippling on leaf surfaces, which progresses into chlorosis and eventual necrosis. The loss of chlorophyll significantly reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, resulting in poor fruit development, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the complete defoliation of the crop.
