Tetranychus tumidellus spider mite

Systematic position. Tetranychus tumidellus belongs to the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and the family Tetranychidae. Known as a specialized phytophagous mite, it has gained significance in modern agronomy due to its high reproductive potential and ability to colonize various economically important plant species under favorable environmental conditions.

Host plants. This species is known for its broad host range. It primarily infests peanut (Arachis hypogaea), soybean, and cotton crops. However, its survival is often supported by various weed species that act as reservoirs during the off-season, allowing the pest to quickly migrate into cultivated fields as soon as the weather becomes hot and dry.

Biology and life cycle. The development of Tetranychus tumidellus is highly temperature-dependent, with shorter life cycles observed during summer months. Females lay eggs on the abaxial side of the leaves, where they build fine silk webbing. This webbing not only provides a microenvironment for the colony but also offers some protection against predators and direct exposure to environmental stress.

Damage and economic impact. The mite causes damage by feeding on the contents of leaf cells. This feeding activity results in chlorotic stippling, which eventually leads to leaf bronzing, wilting, and premature abscission. Significant infestations disrupt plant photosynthesis, leading to reduced plant vigor, stunted growth, and substantial quantitative and qualitative yield losses in commercial crops.

Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential to control Tetranychus tumidellus. Strategies include maintaining field hygiene to remove host weeds and irrigation management to maintain adequate soil moisture, which can deter mite outbreaks. When thresholds are exceeded, the application of acaricides is necessary; it is vital to rotate different chemical classes to prevent the development of pesticide resistance in mite populations.
