Description
The strawberry spider mite (Tetranychus turkestani) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Tetranychidae family. Despite its common name, it is a highly polyphagous species that infests a vast range of crops, including cotton, various vegetables, and ornamental plants, posing a threat to global food security.
This pest is highly adaptable and thrives in warm, dry environments. It colonizes the undersides of leaves, where individuals pierce the plant tissue to extract cell sap. This feeding behavior causes characteristic stippling, which eventually leads to leaf chlorosis, necrosis, and premature defoliation if left unchecked.
The life cycle of Tetranychus turkestani is rapid, especially during hot summer months, allowing multiple generations per season. Adult females overwinter in sheltered spots, such as soil debris or greenhouse structures, and emerge in spring to begin reproduction. This rapid generation turnover often leads to the development of resistance to chemical pesticides.
The presence of fine webbing is a diagnostic feature of a severe infestation. This silk web not only provides protection for the colony but also hampers the growth of the plant by disrupting photosynthesis. Reduced plant vigor leads to lower yields and, in extreme cases, total loss of the crop.
